Making Tax Digital: But Don’t Panic Yet!

If you’ve heard murmurs about Making Tax Digital (MTD) and immediately felt the urge to run for the hills, we get it. When HMRC announces a change, it rarely comes with balloons and a hug. But MTD doesn’t have to be scary.  In fact, with the right support (and maybe a few 80s/90s bangers in the background), it can even make your financial life easier.

In our recent webinar, we broke the whole thing down into human language, sprinkled in some musical nostalgia to soften the blow, and guided attendees through what’s changing, who it affects, and what to do right now.

If you fancy joining us on a future webinar, book in.  Otherwise have a read on……As here’s the full lowdown.

So… What Is Making Tax Digital?

HMRC is rolling out a huge digital transformation of how taxes are reported and recorded. It’s already happened for VAT, and now it’s the turn of income tax.

Think of Making Tax Digital (MTD) like tidying your Lego bricks into labelled boxes instead of leaving them all over the floor. The tax man wants everyone to keep their money-info in neat digital boxes so it’s easier to see what’s what. If you earn money from your business or rent out a property, MTD means you’ll pop your numbers into “an app” regularly instead of saving everything for one big “uh-oh” moment at the end of the year.

Simple, tidy, and no stepping on painful Lego pieces!

MTD will require:

  • Digital record-keeping
  • Quarterly digital submissions
  • Use of MTD-compatible software

As we emphasised in the webinar: this isn’t optional. It’s the biggest tax change in a generation, and yes, everyone over certain income thresholds will need to get onboard.

But you don’t need to become a tech wizard. You just need to start early.

Who Needs to Pay Attention?

If you’re a sole trader or landlord earning over £20,000 in total income (before expenses), MTD for Income Tax is coming your way.

Those affected:

  • Sole traders with income over £20k
  • Landlords with income over £20k
  • Anyone who is both … with a combined income over £20k

Two important words here INCOME and COMBINED.

  • Remember HMRC is looking at an income level – i.e. the top level money coming in, not the resultant profit.
  • And if you have multiple sole trader businesses, or rental properties, HMRC adds them up before deciding whether you’re in the MTD club.

When Does MTD Start for You?

  • April 2026 — if your combined income is over £50,000
  • April 2027 — if it’s over £30,000
  • April 2028 — if it’s between £20,000–£30,000
  • Under £20,000? You’re currently out of scope (for now…)

And yes, we know the dates keep shifting, but the latest Budget feels like the last opportunity the Government had to change these.

What You Need to Do Today (Not Tomorrow, Not Next March… Today)

“You can’t touch this without digital records,” and truly, MC Hammer wasn’t wrong.

Here are your four must-do steps:

  1. Assess how you keep records now
If it involves paper, folders, or emotional support tea… it’s time to go digital.
  2. Update records at least quarterly
MTD requires four submissions a year — meaning you’ll need consistent habits, not last-minute marathons.
  3. Decide whether you need help
Software training now = less overwhelm later.
  4. Yes, you still need to do a Self Assessment
MTD doesn’t replace it; it just adds extra steps.

The Magic of Small Steps

Good news: this doesn’t require a total life overhaul.
A little consistency now = a lot less chaos later.

MTD-aligned good habits include:

  • Updating records regularly
  • Reviewing finances quarterly
  • Reducing errors from bulk processing
  • Gaining visibility of your numbers in real time

And genuinely, these habits aren’t just about HMRC. They make your business better.

This Might All Feel Rubbish — But There Are Benefits

They say accountants are Only Happy When It Rains — but we also look on the Brightside.

MTD can actually:

  • Improve your cash flow
  • Reduce errors
  • Give you clearer insights
  • Save you admin time
  • Help you make better business decisions

Clients who’ve already digitised are seeing growth because they’re finally able to make decisions from real-time numbers, not year-old guesswork.
